What is freediving?

Is freediving dangerous?

 

Free diving is a safe sport that is done by minimizing the risks, as in all other sports, if it is done consciously by using the right training and diving techniques. Freediving shouldn't be a sport about unconsciously pushing your limits. As the depth, time and distance progress, freedivers follow the rules such as going slowly, accustoming your body to the depth before going deeper, always stopping the dive if there is any discomfort, canceling the whole dive if necessary, with the safe methods taught in the courses. Freediving is always done with a dive partner and  Spouses learn to make security for each other. Additional training, exercises and stretches are available for more advanced freedivers. As in any sport, knowing yourself and your body, knowing your limits and being aware of your mental preparation level as well as physical preparation will make you more conscious of possible dangers.

How is free diving different from snorkeling?

 

Snorkeling is the act of cruising on the beach and in shallow waters, wearing a mask and snorkel and looking underwater while swimming. Snorkelers may not receive any training (a huge benefit!) and spend most of their time on the surface. Freediving takes snorkeling a step further by adding underwater and deep dives. Freedivers receive training in which they acquire many additional skills such as efficient diving, masks, fins, snorkels, weight belts and advanced breath holding and safety techniques.

Freediving uses advanced breathing techniques and diving skills to increase depth and duration underwater. Through training, free divers also learn to use oxygen most efficiently while practicing different freediving disciplines such as static apnea, dynamic apnea, free fall and fixed weight freediving.

Is freediving difficult?

 

Just like swimming, skiing and figure skating, tennis are individual sports, so is freediving, which requires training and practice. It's a bit of a challenge physically and mentally, and it takes time, training and effort to get better. It is easy to start this sport, you can quickly learn the basic skills, you can constantly improve them with training and regular practice. Freediving competitions are getting more and more attention as time goes by and this sport is becoming more and more popular.

At what age does freediving training start?

 

You must be at least 10 years old for basic freediving training. Although age limits vary for different levels, 10-year-olds can attend beginner freediving training with the approval and accompaniment of their parents and start training from a freediving instructor. Children can safely dive with a freediving instructor, especially in shallow water or in the pool at the beginner level. They can improve themselves by participating in training in accordance with their physical level and development.

Why is freediving called "freediving"?

 

"Apnea" in Greek means "airless" and freediving is also called "Apnea"  Also called. Freediving is similar to snorkeling, but in freediving we have to hold our breath while diving into deep water. In free diving, there is no need for additional air sources, tubes, regulators to breathe. It is also called that because we dive completely with our own resources, without being dependent on anything. Instead of using an air tank, free divers hold their breath until they reach the surface of the sea.

How long do free divers hold their breath?

 

The average person who has not received any breath-holding training can hold their breath for about 30 seconds without trying too hard. Among free divers who are well trained and exercise regularly, there are those who hold their breath for more than 10 minutes. Breath-hold times will vary greatly, with or without motion, on the surface or under water. Free diving trainings and specialization programs provide participants with very detailed information on these issues.  Do not try to hold your breath alone, never force yourself.

What is the world record for holding breath for the longest time?

​

Croatian diver Budimir Buddha Sobat broke his own world record again in April 2021 after holding his breath underwater for about 25 minutes. Croatian diver Budimir Buddha Sobat, who entered the Guinness Book of Records by holding 24 minutes and 37 seconds, is 54 years old, and besides working for this record for years, he prepared himself for this record for 1 year by breathing additional oxygen and other different methods before diving. The duration of breathing with only normal air is around 10 minutes.

How long can the average person hold their breath?

 

Most people can safely hold their breath for 1 to 2 minutes with some training and experience. The length of time you can hold your breath comfortably and safely also depends on your body and genetics. Especially if you have not been trained and are not experienced in holding your breath under water, do not try to hold your breath for long periods of time and for periods that force your breathing.

Beginner free divers can easily acquire breath-holding skills for 2 minutes or more during training.

How can free divers go this deep?

 

How do free divers dive so deep and go this long without breathing? One reason for this is;  It is the mammalian diving reflex, which is an evolutionary adaptation in humans, such as seals and dolphins, by slowing and/or shutting down some physiological functions, allowing them to dive deep and stay underwater for a long time. Does freediving hurt your ears?

 

In freediving, it's extremely important to equalize the pressure before you start to have earaches and pain in your sinuses or ears. If you don't equalize and you start to feel pressure in these sensitive air spaces. In this case, stop diving and return to the surface. However, if you have learned the correct equalization techniques, soreness or pain in your ears will no longer be a problem for you.

However, you should also pay attention to issues such as the length of your stay in the water and depth planning in cold waters in winter. You should be aware of the risk of equalization difficulties in cold water and, in the worst cases, hypothermia.
